The Good Captain x Director River Jordan

Photographer: River Jordan
Location: Channel Islands, CA
Shoot Days: 4
Project: The Good Captain

The Good Captain is a short film by River Jordan about distance and return.

Shot over four days in the Channel Islands, the project was more than a decade in the making. River first connected with diver John Hoadley ten years earlier during an impromptu visit to the California Urchin Divers Association annual picnic. True to form, River climbed onto a table and asked if anyone would be open to being photographed at work. John stepped forward, and the friendship was instant. That first collaboration led to a body of work that was featured in Outside Magazine and earned several awards.

Ten years later, after countless life changes and a combined five children between them, River and John reunited to create The Good Captain. The film reflects a moment both found themselves navigating. As River puts it, "we are both working through the balance between family life and the obligations of our chosen careers. Each being pulled over distant horizons to provide for our families. Heeding the call, we set out to capture artful visuals overlayed with a message that echoed to a universal audience."
