This is the exact shoot Andrew had been wanting to do for a while. A real California family, living a full life, with character baked in. The Skobys were all of that and then some. They opened up their San Diego home, and the afternoon Andrew spent photographing them became Dwell's feature on the renovation.
They had just finished a gut renovation on their bungalow, funded in part by bartering Joe's ceramic work. Andrew, who had just come off his own remodel and is always building or fixing something, was hooked the moment he heard it. That Midwest craftsman sensibility runs deep in how he sees people, and the Skobys gave him the afternoon to document.
He showed up with grocery bags of food and charcuterie and let the day shape itself. Joe at the pottery wheel in the driveway. Surfboards loaded in the truck bed. Kids taking over the trampoline while the grown-ups moved through the kitchen and the garden. The family's connection to each other and to the things they make is all over that house, and Andrew was grateful to document all of it.
The light that afternoon was warm and directional, California sun moving through a home that was clearly designed to live in it. Andrew read it as it shifted through the rooms and the yard, building each frame around where it landed. The interiors are considered without being precious: wood beams, open shelving, a kitchen that actually gets used. The outdoor spaces blur into the garden in a way that made the whole property feel like one continuous frame. He moved through all of it close and quiet, and the images land somewhere between a family portrait and an architectural story.
